Playa Mujeres (Yaiza): how to get there and today's wind
The first of the south's wild beaches, at the gateway to Papagayo: pale sand, no buildings, reached on a dirt track.
Playa Mujeres is the first large beach you reach on entering the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, the protected stretch of coast east of Playa Blanca in the municipality of Yaiza. Pale sand, clear water and, behind it, nothing but red earth and scrub: there is not a single building here.
It is wider and more open than the Papagayo coves further on, so there is always room even when the others are full. It faces south towards Fuerteventura and is usually calm.
Getting there
From Playa Blanca take the dirt track into the protected area; there is a toll per vehicle at the entrance. The track is dusty and rough but passable slowly in an ordinary car. You can also walk along the coast, about half an hour from the centre of Playa Blanca.
Good to know
There is nothing here: no bar, no showers, no shade, no lifeguard. Water, food, a hat and a bag for your rubbish come in with you and go back out with you. This is protected land, and it shows: leave it as it is.
