On 29 August the Playa Honda crossing closes the open-water cup

On 29 August the open-water summer closes: at Playa Honda, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, the fourteenth Travesía a nado Emmax takes to the water.
It's the third and final leg of the Copa de Aguas Abiertas de Lanzarote. The first two were swum at El Poril, off Puerto del Carmen, on 1 August, and in Arrecife harbour on the 22nd during the San Ginés festivities. Anyone who has done all three finishes the circuit here.
Playa Honda has the longest beach on the south-east coast, shallow and sheltered from the prevailing winds: which is why this is also the race that draws the less seasoned swimmers. And it's a stone's throw from the airport, easy to reach from anywhere on the island.
For non-swimmers there's still a good reason for a morning at the beach: the mass starts in shallow water are the best thing you'll see all day.
