Bernardas: collective theatre lab in Playa Honda, performances 26 and 27 November

Bernardas is a collective, inclusive and intergenerational theatre project organised by the Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa with the collaboration of the Ayuntamiento de San Bartolomé. It is led by the company Cuerpo Teatro, directed by stage creator Siscu Ruz.

The starting point is The House of Bernarda Alba by Federico García Lorca. More than ninety years after its premiere, the play becomes raw material for questions that remain unresolved: freedom, identity, power and how different generations live together. The aim is not a period revival but a new piece built by the participants themselves.

The format is a theatre laboratory. Participants work with body, voice, movement, rhythm and visual composition, shaping a collective creation out of their own experiences and points of view. The stages of the creative process take place at the Centro Cívico in Playa Honda between September and November, with weekly sessions.

Pre-registration is open from 1 to 8 September. The project ends with performances on 26 and 27 November 2026 at the Terrero de Lucha Canaria in Playa Honda, the venue normally used for Canarian wrestling.

For residents and long-stay visitors

Weekly rehearsals over three months make this a project for people already based on the island or staying for a full season rather than a fortnight. No previous stage experience is required, and the intergenerational approach means teenagers and older participants share the same room. If you are on Lanzarote in late November, the two performances at the terrero are a chance to see local amateur and first-time performers working on a canonical Spanish text, in a space with no theatrical trappings.
