'Caperucita 5.0': free family theatre in Arrecife on Saturday 29 August

The Sabatea, teatro en los barrios series reaches its second stop on Saturday 29 August at 11:30, with a performance of 'Caperucita 5.0' at the Centro Sociocultural de San Francisco Javier in Arrecife. The show is staged by the company Artus Teatro y Vida and entry is free until the venue reaches capacity.

The production is aimed specifically at children and families, with an adapted, participatory staging that gives the Little Red Riding Hood story a contemporary twist. It is performed in Spanish, in a neighbourhood hall rather than a conventional theatre.

That is the point of the series: to bring performing arts straight into the districts of the island's capital. Sabatea began in July in Argana Baja with 'El traje nuevo', a version of the Hans Christian Andersen classic staged by Emaná Teatro.

From here the programme continues touring different community centres across Arrecife, so that local children and families can see live theatre a few streets from home.

Practical notes for visitors

There is no ticketing and no booking, so seats go on a first-come basis: arriving fifteen to twenty minutes early is a reasonable precaution. The 11:30 slot works well if you are staying on the coast and want to spend the rest of the morning in Arrecife, around the Charco de San Gines or the seafront promenade. Community centre halls are small and the audience sits close to the performers, which helps younger children follow the action even without full command of Spanish.
