Punta Mujeres holds its Virgen del Pino fiestas from 31 August to 8 September

The coastal village of Punta Mujeres, in the municipality of Haría, celebrates its fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora del Pino from 31 August to 8 September. The Ayuntamiento de Haría and the local Comisión de Fiestas have put together a programme aimed at residents and visitors alike, mixing tradition, music, sport, crafts and family activities.

The opening day, Monday 31 August, begins with the decoration of the streets and house façades, followed by a rondalla dance workshop, ronda championships, a boxing demonstration and the Mercadillo Km0 craft market. Later comes a parade of giants and big-heads with the batucada drumming group Los Yaiseros, and a tribute to Jesús Perdomo Ramírez marking the tenth anniversary of the El Marinero residents' association, with performances by Atlántico Trío and Ciro Corujo.

The following days bring traditional games, workshops in rosetas lacework and macramé, children's activities, gymkhanas, cookery contests and championships of bola, envite, truco and chinchón, along with events for older residents and a series of music performances rooted in local repertoire. The Km0 market stays open for much of the week, showcasing the work of area craftspeople.

The mayor of Haría, Alfredo Villalba, describes the fiestas as an opportunity "to meet, to share and to keep alive traditions that are part of the identity of the village and of the whole municipality". Festivities councillor Alberto de León highlights a programme "designed for all ages, with room for music, folklore, sport, traditional games, crafts and children's activities".

Getting there and what to expect

Punta Mujeres sits on the north-eastern coast, a cluster of white houses known for the natural seawater pools carved into the old lava flow. During fiesta week the village fills up and roadside parking disappears early, so it is easier to leave the car on the edge of the village and walk the last stretch. If you plan to swim in the pools, watch the swell: on windy days the ocean pushes hard through the openings. Evenings on this stretch of coast are noticeably cooler than the afternoons, so bring a layer for the night-time performances.
