Arrecife reopens Parque Temático with a new seafront public terrace

The Parque Temático in Arrecife, built on land reclaimed from the sea, is busy again. The opening weekend of the new public terrace promoted by the Ayuntamiento de Arrecife drew hundreds of families to a spot that had been left unused since 2018, after the previous concession ended.

Mayor Yonathan de León said that recovering the concession allowed the council to relaunch the site for family leisure. He attended the opening alongside councillor Eli Merino, as the Tardeos Arrecife afternoon programme got under way to bring life back to the square.

The work was carried out by municipal crews under the public works department. The main job was the full refurbishment of the public toilets, which now include an adapted facility. The children's playground was also renewed with attractions accessible to wheelchair users, and the approaches to the area were tidied up.

The terrace is fitted with tropical parasols, tables made from handcrafted barrels and stools. Looking ahead, the council has approved a technical plan to turn the whole surrounding area into a large green lung, with sports facilities, an open-air summer cinema, an outdoor gym and a dog park. The tender for that project goes out in 2027.

Practical notes for visitors

The Parque Temático is a short walk from central Arrecife along the waterfront, so no car is needed. It is one of the few places in the capital where a playground and a shaded outdoor stop sit side by side, which makes it useful if you are travelling with children. Adapted toilets and accessible play equipment are now in place. Late afternoon is the best window: the heat drops and the Atlantic breeze makes the terrace comfortable.
