Stabat Mater in Tinajo: Vivaldi and Pergolesi at San Roque church on 19 September

Lanzarote Ensemble has programmed a concert built around the Stabat Mater for Saturday 19 September at 8.30pm at the church of San Roque in Tinajo — the medieval poem contemplating Mary's grief at the foot of the cross.

In one evening you hear the two best-known settings the Italian baroque left behind. Antonio Vivaldi's, written around 1712 for contralto and strings, is the more inward: spare in its means and sharper for it. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's, from 1736 and composed shortly before his death, is for soprano, alto and strings, and carries a different light — more melodic, more open.

Lanzarote Ensemble is a shifting formation that changes line-up according to the repertoire and works a great deal on new writing. It is backed by the Cabildo de Lanzarote; the concert is held with the San Roque parish.
