Environmental monitors on the beach all through October: how to sort properly, with a tablet in the draw

There is a mistake almost all of us make and nobody ever explains: what actually goes in the yellow bin. Throughout October, the Cabildo is sending environmental monitors straight onto the beach to answer, at Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.

What they explain

The focus is the yellow bin: it takes cans, drink cartons and plastic packaging. It is not the bin for plastic in general — it is the bin for packaging, and that is exactly the distinction people get wrong, at home and on holiday.

What you will find

• Environmental monitors at the water's edge, answering questions
• Interactive digital surveys
• Scratch-and-win games with instant prizes
• A draw for a tablet on each island

Who is running it, and why here

The initiative comes from the Cabildo with the Canary Islands Government and Ecoembes. President Oswaldo Betancort explains the choice of the beach: it is where you reach residents and tourists at the same time — which is the heart of the problem, since someone here for a week does not know the local system and gets it wrong in good faith.

Councillor Domingo Cejas says the aim is to correct the most common everyday mistakes, the ones repeated in the kitchen without noticing. Sorting properly at the start makes everything downstream far easier: it is work saved later, not a symbolic gesture.
