Yaiza pays 6 million to suppliers with 11 million of works under way

The town hall of Yaiza has paid 6 million euros for supplies, works, services and grants between May and the first weeks of August 2026. The money went to self-employed workers, small and medium-sized businesses and sports and social care organisations that completed municipal commissions on time and to specification.

Mayor Óscar Noda framed the figures by saying that the council is keeping up its investment pace «without altering the public debt, which remains at zero euros, and with our municipality at full employment levels».

Construction work currently in progress totals 11 million euros. The largest items are the refurbishment of Avenida Papagayo (2.6 million), the sewerage system in Uga (1.8), the upgrading of the surroundings of the Uga wrestling ground (1.3), the extension of the San Marcial del Rubicón sports court (1.3) and a complete overhaul of the Playa Blanca entrance from the Femés side (1.3 million). Smaller projects include improvements to the Uga court and the outdoor areas of the village school (952,000 euros), a new road named Azores next to the Playa Blanca health centre (924,000) and the renewal of the playgrounds at Marcastell (197,000) and Faro Pechiguera (110,000).

Still awaiting a start on site is the resurfacing and accessibility scheme covering seven streets in Las Coloradas, a contract already signed for one million euros. On the tendering side, Yaiza has procedures running for a library and socio-cultural centre in Playa Blanca, improvements and facilities at the football ground and street lighting in the old part of the village, with a combined budget reserve of 6.5 million euros. The council also expects to award shortly the new waste collection contract, estimated at 36 million euros over ten years.

What it means on the ground in Playa Blanca

Visitors staying in the south of the island should plan for roadworks on three fronts at once: Avenida Papagayo, the access road from Femés and the area around the health centre, where the new Azores street is being built. Traffic towards the port and the Fuerteventura ferries can be slower than usual at peak times, so allow extra minutes if you have a crossing booked. Families should also note that the playgrounds at Marcastell and Faro Pechiguera are being rebuilt and will be closed while the work lasts.
