Macher theatre company stages seaside hotel comedy in Tias on 6 September

Tias Municipal Theatre hosts El Hotel de Macher a la orilla del mar on Sunday 6 September at 8pm, the latest piece by the local company Teatro de Macher. The performance runs for about an hour, finishing around 9pm.

The play is an in-house production directed by Jonathan Ramirez. The poster shows three of its characters inside the peculiar hotel that gives the piece its name, signalling a comedy rather than a drama.

Admission is free. For a company based in Macher, a small inland village on the way up from the coast, the municipal theatre stage is the main chance to reach an audience beyond the village itself.

The performance is in Spanish. Even so, the short running time and the physical, comic register make it accessible to visitors with a basic grasp of the language, and it is one of the few chances to see amateur island theatre rather than a touring show.

The theatre stands in the centre of Tias, a few minutes by car from Puerto del Carmen and from Macher itself. As entry is free and no booking is mentioned, arriving well before 8pm is advisable, since seats tend to fill in the final half hour. Buses climb from the coast to Tias, but Sunday evening services are less frequent, so check the return timetable before setting off.
