'Unico': children's theatre in Argana Baja, Arrecife, on Thursday 3 September

The Centro Sociocultural de Argana Baja, in Arrecife, hosts Unico on Thursday 3 September, a children's theatre piece that mixes original playwriting with digital arts. The show starts at 6pm and admission is free until capacity is reached. It is programmed by Cultura Arrecife and aimed in particular at children aged 3 to 7.

Staged by the company Bolina Teatro de Titeres, the production drops the usual rows of seats and turns the whole performance area into a space construction station. Children are grouped into six ships under umbrellas of light and take an active part rather than simply watching from a distance.

The story follows Lumi, a round, soft creature rejected in a world made of straight lines. Using sand art, shadow puppetry and audiovisual projections, the young audience helps Lumi build a Moon-Ship of its own. An interactive workshop follows the performance.

Arrecife's councillor for Culture, Abigail Gonzalez, said the immersive show "encourages values such as accepting the person who is different, respect for singularity and friendship", describing it as an innovative cultural experience that invites young children to think, through play and emotion, about the value of being themselves.

The performance had originally been scheduled for 27 June and was postponed after official mourning was declared in Arrecife following the earthquakes in Venezuela.

Practical notes for visiting families

There is no advance booking, so places go on a first-come basis and it is worth arriving well before 6pm: the Centro Sociocultural has limited capacity and the doors close once it is full. Because children move around the stage area, comfortable clothes and shoes help. The visual and sound language is built for the 3-7 age range, and the post-show workshop adds time to the overall visit, something to weigh up if you are out with toddlers. Argana Baja is a residential district of Arrecife, a short drive or bus ride from the capital's centre and easy to reach from the main tourist resorts.
