Teguise opens applications for six new taxi licences, two wheelchair-accessible

The Ayuntamiento de Teguise has opened applications for six new taxi licences covering passenger transport in vehicles seating between five and nine people. Two of the six are reserved for cars adapted to carry passengers with reduced mobility, a condition intended to make the service more accessible across the municipality.

The call follows a council decision to increase the total number of taxi licences in Teguise. The municipality covers a large and unusually scattered area, from the historic Villa to Costa Teguise and the inland villages, and each of those centres generates very different transport demand at different hours of the day.

Mayor Olivia Duque described the expansion as "an important step towards continuing to improve the taxi service and meet the mobility needs of residents and visitors", adding that the council wants Teguise to have a transport service that is "sufficient, accessible and adapted to the reality of a large municipality with such varied population centres".

Transport councillor Javier Diaz framed the measure as part of a wider effort to improve municipal public services, saying the additional licences "will increase the capacity of the service and offer new opportunities to the professionals already working in the municipality".

Under the terms of the call, priority goes to the seniority of salaried drivers or self-employed collaborators who have provided taxi services in Teguise continuously and can prove it. If applications from those professionals do not cover all six licences, the remaining ones are open to individuals who meet the stated requirements through a competitive process.

What the rules ask for

Applicants must be individuals rather than companies, hold the required driving licence and the municipal taxi driver permit, be actively working and up to date with their obligations. In practice, drivers who already work for a licence holder in Teguise have the strongest position, provided they can document their years of service with contracts and employment records. Anyone aiming at the two adapted licences should also factor in the higher cost of a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Deadlines and application forms are handled directly by the Ayuntamiento de Teguise.
