Yaiza's September programme: free theatre workshop, family storytelling and live music

September in Yaiza is built around stage work and activities for children. The town council has published the full programme on the front page of www.yaiza.es and in the printed Agenda, which residents can pick up at municipal offices and the usual distribution points. Running alongside it are the Los Remedios fiestas, which continue until Wednesday 9 September.

The training strand begins on 22 September, when actor and director Siscu Ruz starts a new cycle of creation and performance classes at the Uga cultural centre. He has run similar courses in the municipality before, each ending with the premiere of a play performed by participants of different ages. Places are free; days, times and registration details are set out in the municipal Agenda.

On 26 September the company Somos Teatro returns with La Boda, a socially themed piece about how Alzheimer's slowly erodes memory and the ability to think. The performance is followed by a talk with geriatric doctor Elisa Corujo.

Music frames the month. On Friday 4 September at 20:00 the Agrupacion Vocal de Yaiza, conducted by Nuvi Tavio, performs the gala Canciones que fueron poemas at the Casa de la Cultura, with musical accompaniment from the Vientar Trio. On 11 September, in the same venue, the Bravo duo present Alma en Concierto, an intimate voice-and-piano evening with singer Araceli Bravo and pianist Fran Mauri. The programme also launches 'Cuento Contigo', a storytelling project aimed at children and designed to be enjoyed as a family, plus a series of health and wellbeing talks organised by the council.

Practical notes for visitors

Most of these events are aimed at local residents, but they are open and free of the tourist-circuit feel, which makes them a good way to see how the municipality lives outside the resorts. Two venues are involved and they are not the same place: the Casa de la Cultura in Yaiza village for the concerts, and the Uga cultural centre for the acting course. Exact times change from week to week and are only confirmed in the municipal Agenda, available in print at council premises. Note that performances are in Spanish. In the first days of the month, with the Los Remedios fiestas still running until the 9th, expect busier roads and limited parking in the villages concerned.
