Playa Blanca's small beach closed after a sewage discharge

Yaiza council ordered the temporary closure of the small beach at Playa Blanca on Tuesday morning after a sewage discharge. The council asks residents and visitors to respect the red flag and use other southern beaches until tests show the water is safe for swimming again.

The cause is a failure at the pumping station near the beach. The council has reported the fault to the Consorcio del Agua de Lanzarote, the public body responsible, so that it can act and stop the discharge.

There is no reopening date: it depends on public health laboratory samples. Until those results arrive the flag stays red — and a red flag is not advice, it is a prohibition.

Where to go meanwhile

Southern Yaiza has alternatives minutes away: Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo are still within Playa Blanca, and further east lie the Papagayo coves inside the natural park. Before setting out, check that the closure still applies only to the small beach.
