The week in Lanzarote: what to do from 28 September to 4 October

October comes in slowly on Lanzarote: the days are still long, the sea is still warm and the villages start their fiesta season. Here is what is worth your time, day by day, from Monday 28 September to Sunday 4 October.

Monday 28: two things open at once

In El Cuchillo, in the municipality of Tinajo, the Fiestas del Pilar begin: a fortnight of tournaments, workshops, parrandas and, on 10 October, the first Jolgorio Fest with food trucks. It opens with children's bola canaria.

The same day, bookings open for 'Palabras al Vuelo', the international oral storytelling festival that from 8 to 18 October brings six storytellers from four countries to Arrecife, San Bartolomé, Tías, Haría and Yaiza. The shows are free, but places in the workshops and small venues must be reserved: Monday is the day to do it.

Tuesday to Thursday: the deadlines that matter

2 October closes the residents' vote on the theme of the 2027 Teguise Carnival: if you live in the municipality, you can still have your say.

4 October is the deadline for Yaiza's grants to its athletes: 15,000 euros for those competing off the island.

On Wednesday 30 and Thursday 1 October, the Cine Buñuel at El Almacén screens Yo no moriré de amor, by Marta Matute.

Thursday 1 October: the best night of the week

At the Teatro Víctor Fernández Gopar 'El Salinero', at 8pm, Recuerdos del Jable: a year after the death of Antonio Corujo, barber and champion of the coplas of the poet Gopar, his family takes the stage to sing the verses he sang. The kind of night Arrecife does not repeat.

Friday 2, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4: the world in the square

In Playa Blanca, in the Plaza del Carmen, three days of Ritmos del Mundo: dance, music and performances from several countries, with tastings of each one's traditional dishes. Free entry.

In El Cuchillo, Saturday 3 is the first big night of the fiestas: at 8.30pm the enyesque canario with Fefo Nieves's recipes, then 'Entre cuerdas' with Parranda La Aldaba, Parranda Tinasoria and Son del Norte.

Also on Saturday 3, at 8pm, the Teatro El Salinero stages Libros cruzados, by the company Delirium Teatro.

And all week long

Arrecife en Vivo runs to 10 October with its free street concerts. The Casa Amarilla in Arrecife has the exhibition marking thirty years of Rosana's Lunas Rotas. The Sala El Aljibe in Haría is showing the painting of Claudie Hüppe — last days, it closes on 3 October. And El Almacén continues its series 'A Room of One's Own' on the women history erased.
