The Canary Islands International Music Festival runs a strand devoted to contemporary music, and this year it has put it under a telling heading: music and science. The Lanzarote date is Monday 5 October, at the Convento de Santo Domingo in Teguise, with pianist Laura Farré Rozada.

The programme

It is called Del caos al Cosmos and explores the relationship between mathematics and composition. This is not a hook: Farré Rozada is both a pianist and a mathematician, and has spent years working on exactly that border — how a numerical structure turns into something you hear. The same tour also takes in Fuerteventura and La Palma.

Where it is, and why it matters

The Convento de Santo Domingo sits in the heart of the Villa de Teguise, the old capital: high ceilings, stone, and an acoustic that suits solo piano very well. It is one of the few places on the island where a contemporary concert does not feel out of place.

The strand runs from 28 September to 5 October with six concerts across Gran Canaria and Tenerife, and closes on 10 and 11 October with the Ensemble Sonido Extremo.
