Femés celebrates the Virgen del Rosario until Sunday, with the romería through the village streets

Femés is one of those villages you see from a distance before you reach it: up on the ridge, the sea on one side and Playa Blanca far below. From Friday 2 to Sunday 4 October it celebrates its patron, the Virgen Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
The moment not to miss
It is Sunday afternoon: first the religious service, then the traditional romería through the village streets. A romería is a procession that turns into a party: carts, costumes, wine and food handed round as everyone walks. In a village as small as Femés, that means the whole village is in it.
Why go up
The programme is built for families, and the people here have a reputation for welcoming whoever turns up. If you have never been up to Femés, this is a good excuse: from the mirador beside the church you can see the whole south of the island and, on a clear day, Fuerteventura.
One thing to bear in mind: Sunday 4 is also the day of the Vuelta Ciclista, with road closures in the Yaiza municipality between 11am and 2pm. If you drive up to Femés in that window, allow for a detour.
