Marina Abramović is in Arrecife, in a free gallery, until January

The biggest name to pass through El Almacén in a long while is not from Lanzarote: it is from Belgrade. Marina Abramović, the woman who turned performance art into a recognised discipline, is one of four names in the exhibitions that have just opened.
They run until January, and they are free.
The four
Marina Abramović brings audiovisual work: video performances. Not her physical presence — that is paid for in New York — but her work, inside a room in Arrecife.
Jesús Madriñán, in the Cubo room, shows Lanzarote: photographs taken on analogue cameras, portraits of tourists. A photographer pointing the lens at the people who normally hold it.
María Rosa Aránega, in La Salita, presents Atlas Lanzarote: digital archives, a reading of the volcanic landscape assembled piece by piece.
Germán Páez shows Wild palms.
Why it is news
The culture councillor, Jesús Machín Tavío, put it exactly right: in these rooms «local and international work will live side by side». That is the thing this island rarely manages. Two of the residencies behind these shows were supported by the Hotel Nautilus; Galder Acha welcomed the partnership.
Plainly: in Arrecife, free, until January, you can see Abramović and two serious looks at Lanzarote by people who have studied it. That does not happen often.
Where
El Almacén, calle José Betancort 33, Arrecife. The exhibitions stay open until January. The same building holds the Cine Buñuel, the bookshop and the bar: you can do the lot in one go.
