Aperitivo in La Geria: the wineries that open to visitors

The LZ-30 road crosses La Geria, the landscape of pits dug into volcanic ash. Several wineries along it open to the public and run tastings: among the best known are Bodegas Rubicón and Bodega La Geria, which over the mid-August weekend also host the traditional harvest.

You drink malvasía volcánica, the dry mineral white that grows only here, often with island goat's cheese alongside.

How to plan it

Go in late afternoon: the low light picks out the thousands of pits one by one, and that is when the terraces fill up.

Drivers should bear this in mind: the LZ-30 is narrow and dark after sunset. The sensible move is to agree in advance who is not drinking, or to book transport.
