Los Peques de Uga perform in Yaiza and announce a children's carnival troupe

On Sunday evening the Plaza de Los Remedios in Yaiza hosted the Play Back Los Peques de Uga, the children's performance group led by choreographer Ruymán Medina. Part of the village's Fiestas de Los Remedios, the show ran for more than an hour and a half of dance and music.

The square filled with the families of the young performers, along with residents and visitors who came for the gala. Soloist Coral Silva also performed during the evening, sharing the programme with the Uga group.

The night's main announcement came from Ruymán Medina himself, who revealed a new project: the first children's carnival comparsa in Lanzarote, developed together with dancer Nera Cáceres. The troupe is expected to make its debut during the 2027 carnival season.

On behalf of the Ayuntamiento de Yaiza, mayor Óscar Noda and festivities councillor Daniel Medina congratulated Los Peques de Uga and the team and families supporting their work, and wished the future children's troupe well.

Village fiestas, and how to catch them

Comparsas are the costumed, percussion-driven groups that shape Canarian carnival parades. Adult troupes are a fixture in Lanzarote's municipal cabalgatas, but until now no group had been built entirely around children, which is what makes the Uga project notable. For visitors, performances like this one are worth knowing about: island fiestas are organised by each ayuntamiento for its own residents, take place in the main square rather than in hotel venues, run late into the evening and are free to attend. Yaiza, in the south of the island, is a short drive from the Timanfaya area and from the beaches of the Rubicón coast.
