Teguise revives the Luis Ramírez grants: three awards of €500, one reserved for La Graciosa

Teguise council has reopened the Luis Ramírez grants, aimed at young people from the municipality who must leave Lanzarote to continue their studies. This was not a given: the call had not been issued for more than eight years.

There are three awards of €500 per academic year. One of the three is reserved for a student from La Graciosa — a decision that says something: from the eighth island, going away to study means two boats before you even board a plane.

The grants are paid through the Salesian Fathers' religious congregation, following the historic arrangement of the bequest that bears Luis Ramírez's name.

Why they matter

Five hundred euros does not pay for a year away, and that should be said. But on an island without a university, every student who leaves takes on a cost their mainland peers do not have: accommodation, flights, getting home for the holidays. A public grant that acknowledges that gap, after eight years of silence, is news.
