When age becomes a prejudice: Thursday's round table at the Manrique Foundation

There is a word for the discrimination people face because of their age — in Spanish, edadismo; in English, ageism. The César Manrique Foundation is devoting a round table to it on Thursday 24 September at 7:30pm, in the Sala José Saramago at La Plazuela in Arrecife. Montserrat Celdrán, a doctor of psychology and senior lecturer at the University of Barcelona whose research focuses on the psychology of ageing, and Francisco Gómez Nadal. The journalist Saúl García moderates.

What it is about

The organisers put it this way: the stereotypes and prejudices projected onto older people undermine their identity and dignity, and make healthy ageing harder. The aim of the evening is to learn to recognise such behaviour in order to prevent it.

It is a subject with real weight on Lanzarote: this is the same week in which COGAL, the island's new association for older LGBTI+ people, was launched in Arrecife.
