Who winters here: two free birdwatching walks in Arrecife on 17 October

A whimbrel that breeds on the Arctic tundra spends its winter on the rocks of Arrecife. A turnstone from Greenland pecks along the pier while people walk their dogs. On Saturday 17 October you can go and see them, with people who know how to tell them apart.

The route

The walk follows the capital's shoreline: from the Castillo de San Gabriel to the old La Cebolla pier and on to the Punta de La Lagarta lighthouse. Along the way the specialists explain why this stretch of coast matters so much: it is a canteen and a resting place on a very long migratory route, and without stops like it some journeys could not be made.

Species you may meet include tundra whimbrels, turnstones arrived from Greenland and herons linked to Mediterranean wetlands.

Two groups, twenty places each

There are two routes: one for adults and a family one, designed for young people aged 10 to 16. The guides are Sandra Ramos and Juan José Ramos. Places are limited to twenty per group and registration is required.

The activity is part of Aulaga's projects and is organised by the Lanzarote Quemao Class project laboratory. It is free, takes a morning, and changes the way you look at your own seafront.
