El Amanecer in Arrieta: cherne, sama and vieja facing the northern ocean

Arrieta is the fishing village of Lanzarote's north, the one with the red house on the jetty and La Garita beach. It is also where islanders go to eat fish on a Sunday, and one name that always comes up is El Amanecer.

The restaurant has a large indoor dining room and, above all, a terrace facing the ocean: the northern sea, the real one, with waves breaking on the rocks in front of the tables.

What to order

The island's own fish, starting with the kinds you won't find in tourist restaurants: cherne (wreckfish), sama, abae, vieja (parrotfish), bocinegro. Before that, grilled lapas (limpets) with green mojo, squid, garlic prawns, and the fish and seafood soups. To finish, traditional Canarian desserts: almond bienmesabe and torrijas.

Calle La Garita 46, Arrieta (Haría). Phone 928 179 213. It fills up fast, especially at weekends: the local rule is to arrive between 12:30 and 1pm. The staff are used to crowds and service is quick.
