'A room of one's own': a series at El Almacén on the women history erased

Virginia Woolf said that to write you need money and a room of one's own. That line gives its name to the series of talks running at El Almacén in Arrecife from September to November: Una habitación propia. Visión y huella de relatos femeninos no contados.

What it covers

Stories of women silenced or distorted by traditional historiography, and the mark feminism has left on culture. The route runs through cinema, literature, religion and art history.

Among the subjects: Spain's destape cinema and the image of women it left behind; women and sexual dissidence in Canarian religious contexts; the patriarchal nineteenth century and the social confinement of the heroines of La Regenta, Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina; the beauty canon in Jane Austen's novels; the myth of Erzsébet Báthory; and a fresh reading of Mararía, one of the great Canarian novels.

Art historian Elena Ramírez coordinates. Speakers include Cristo Gil, Daniasa M. Curbelo, Yolanda Ruano, Irene Rodríguez Pintado, Laura Blázquez and Marta Viera.
