Tonight AlgoMás uncorks five Jable de Tao wines, and tomorrow a beer born on Lanzarote is free

There is a place in Arrecife where the island's wine does not sit on a shelf gathering dust: they uncork it, pour it and tell you what you are holding. It is called AlgoMás — craft shop, deli and wine shop at once — and tonight it does one of the things it does best.

Tonight: five wines from Jable de Tao

Friday 9 October at 19:00, a tasting from Bodega Jable de Tao, D.O. Lanzarote. In order, you taste:

• Jable de Tao, the white
• Chupadero
• Tao Tinto
• Tao Paraje
• and a fifth, a surprise, which they are not naming

With picoteo — something to eat that accompanies without distracting.

Who is pouring

The host is Carmelo Peña, oenologist. That is the difference between a drink and a tasting: somebody who knows why that white tastes of stone, what malvasía grown in ash actually does, and why a Lanzarote red resembles no other red in Spain.

And tomorrow, free, a beer born here

If tonight is impossible, tomorrow there is a second round and it costs nothing. Saturday 10 October, 13:00 to 14:00, AlgoMás pours TF Brew'n, a new beer born on Lanzarote. Free tasting, one hour exactly, standing up, at aperitivo time.

Their slogan — «brew the world a better place» — is a better joke in English than anywhere else, but the point is elsewhere: it is a beer made on the island, and beers made here are few.

Why AlgoMás

Because it does something that sounds obvious and on a tourist island is rare: it puts the people who make things here in the same room as the people who live here. This is not a souvenir shop with a few bottles in the window. It is a counter where Canarian craft, food and wine sit side by side, and where every so often the producer turns up in person to explain what they have done.

For anyone living in Arrecife it is where you learn to drink what grows down the road. For anyone passing through, it is the shortest route to taking home something that genuinely exists on Lanzarote.
