Playa Honda is not where you would expect to eat well. It is the district between Arrecife and the airport: low houses, a long beach, planes coming in low overhead. And it is exactly there, on Calle Princesa Ico, that you find one of the most serious Italian kitchens on the island.

Who is behind it

Before Lanzarote, Marco Musso cooked private events in Italy — among his clients, he says, the Fendi family. From that trade he brought two habits you can see from the dining room: an obsession with the raw material, and the instinct to build a menu around the person eating it rather than the person cooking it.

What to eat

The menu moves with the sea: fish of the day from the lonja, fresh pasta, and the grill lit. The dish everybody photographs is pulpo en pignatta (€20), octopus cooked in earthenware and finished over coals. Among the pastas, tortellini filled with mortadella and ham, grilled, with parmigiano fondue (€18) and tonnarelli with clams (€16); the orecchiette with turnip tops and fried anchovy dumplings (€16) are the most Apulian thing on Lanzarote. There is also prawn risotto with burrata cream and citrus (€18).

From the sea, to open: Galician oyster (€4 each), ceviche of the day (€18), prawns and carabineros from La Santa, scallops gratinated with truffle. Off the grill, besides the fish: chuletón de Rubia Gallega (€8.50 per 100 g), picaña, Iberian secreto and lamb cutlets. Homemade desserts €6–8. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options — just say so when you book.

The tables to ask for

Two indoor rooms and, in front, open-air tables above the ocean with Fuerteventura on the horizon. Ask for them when you book, particularly for an early dinner: the sunset on that side is the reason to turn up at seven rather than nine.

Beyond the restaurant

The terrace can be taken over for birthdays, anniversaries and company dinners, with a menu built to order and music if you want it. And there is catering: the same grill, the same fish and the same pasta at your house, in a villa or on board a boat. They set up, serve and clear away.
